In 1018 AD King Canute gave his Royal Estate of Cadlintone (Chillington) to his sister-in-law Gytha on the occasion of her marriage to the powerful Saxon Earl Godwin. Land that was later known as the Manor of Sherford was part of this estate. Two of the children of this marriage were to become monarchs; Edith married Edward the Confessor and became Queen of England in 1044. Harold became King in 1066 following the death of Edward.
Here is a fascinating and detailed account of the village of Sherford from these royal beginnings to the effects of 20th century wars, and encompassing all the rich years in between. John Goodman financed this well-researched study himself, all profits going to the Parish Church of St Martin, which he believes dates back to very ancient times.
