Benny Goodman’s Final Sortie – Target Marking over Saumur

Group Captain Goodman’s flying career spanned the era which began with biplanes and ended with the introduction of jet aircraft. As an operational pilot in Bomber Command, he flew 78 missions against targets in both Europe and the Middle East . Initially, he was a Wellington pilot with 37, and then 99 Squadron, following which he instructed on the same aircraft, before being selected to fly the incomparable Mosquito. After joining 139 Squadron as a pathfinder, he was one of the first pilots on 627 Squadron, an elite unit which honed the techniques of low-level precision target marking at night.
